Mombasa is Kenya's second city and the heart of the Swahili coast. Its old town layers Arabic, Portuguese and Indian influence around the 16th-century Fort Jesus.
The beaches at Nyali, Bamburi and Diani run to white sand and warm Indian Ocean water. Mombasa Marine National Park offers snorkelling and diving, and a Tamarind dhow dinner cruise is a coastal institution.
Best time to visit
December to March is hot, dry and reliably sunny. June to October is cooler and still largely dry. The long rains fall from April into May.
